Gladysha Sukardan: "You have to make yourself a priority."

"As cliche as it sounds, my life really did change for the better when I started my fitness journey all those years ago."

Despite my somewhat confident appearance on the outside, I actually once suffered low self-esteem, and was unable to remove myself from a very toxic environment at home.

I was giving a lot of my emotional energy to things in my environment that were out of my control, and in turn I couldn't put any effort in to my own health and well-being.

The gym, and weight-training, as it turned out, became a place where I could put all my energy into taking care of me. A place where I shut out all the things causing me stress, and focused on improving myself.

When I started to reach my goals and started to love my body, and more importantly; understand it, that's when my life changed. I was more confident, I made better decisions, and there was more positive in my life.

Building self-confidence has been a process for Gladysha

Of course, not everyone understood my journey at first. People were puzzled because I wasn't drinking alcohol anymore, I wasn't eating out, and people would make comments whenever I pulled out my Tupperware container. The judgements were tough to deal with at first, I succumbed to peer pressure heaps of times, and am completely guilty of questioning why I was actually doing it all.

What I realised though, is not everyone is going to understand or love your journey, and that's ok.

What's important is that you love your journey.

And I did. I still do. It has continued to teach me new things, challenged me, helped me grow, introduced me to new people, and every once in a while, I get to do a fun photo-shoot! haha

My biggest piece of advice is to create a 'To Do' list and make sure your own name is at the top of the list. If there is ever a time to be selfish, it's when taking care of your health and well-being. This means allocating time for yourself and your goals, even when it seems like there is no time left in your busy schedule.

You have to make yourself a priority.
